💡 Writing Your VESPA Reflection

🎯 Setting Effective Study Goals

💬 Coaching Conversation Guide

Your response helps your tutor/mentor understand your unique situation and provide personalized support. Be honest and specific - there are no wrong answers!

📊 Reflecting on Your VESPA Scores

Consider how accurately the report reflects your current study habits:

  • Do the scores feel right? Which ones resonate most with your experience?
  • Any surprises? Were any scores higher or lower than expected?
  • Your strengths: What's your highest score telling you?
  • Growth areas: What might your lowest score suggest?

Try starting with:

"Looking at my scores, I was surprised to see..."

"My [highest/lowest] score in [area] makes sense because..."

"I think the report is [very/somewhat/not very] accurate because..."

📚 Your Current Study Experience

Help your tutor/mentor understand what studying is really like for you right now:

  • Daily reality: What does a typical study session look like?
  • Challenges: What's been particularly difficult lately?
  • Successes: What study strategies are working well?
  • Time management: How do you balance study with other commitments?

Tips for Effective Study Goals

  • Keep them specific and achievable - Instead of "study more", try "complete 2 practice papers this week"
  • Focus on approach goals - Set targets you're working towards, not things you're trying to avoid
  • Make them measurable - Include numbers or specific outcomes so you know when you've achieved them
  • Set a timeframe - Give yourself a deadline to create urgency and track progress

Types of Effective Approach Goals

🎯 Performance Goals

"I want to achieve 75% or higher in my next test"

Focus on achieving a specific ranking or score

📈 Mastery Goals

"I will improve my essay structure by practicing introductions daily"

Focus on developing specific skills

❌ Avoid These Types of Goals

  • "I just don't want to fail" (avoidance goal)
  • "I hope I don't run out of time" (focuses on negative)
  • "As long as I pass" (lacks ambition)

Effective coaching conversations build trust, encourage reflection, and empower students to take ownership of their learning journey.

🎯 Opening the Conversation

Start with appreciation and curiosity:

  • Acknowledge their effort: "Thank you for sharing your thoughts about..."
  • Show you've read their response: "I noticed you mentioned..."
  • Express genuine interest: "I'd love to understand more about..."

Opening phrases:

"I appreciate your honesty about [specific challenge]..."

"Your reflection on [score/area] shows good self-awareness..."

🔑 Key Principles

  • Listen more than you speak - Their insights matter most
  • Ask, don't tell - Questions empower; advice can disempower
  • Focus on strengths - Build from what's working
  • Small steps count - Progress over perfection
